Primary Blog/Recipes & Nutrition/Maintain, Don’t Gain: How to Keep Your Fitness Progress Over the Holidays

The holiday season is notorious for disrupting even the most committed fitness routines. With endless holiday parties, family gatherings, and indulgent treats, it’s easy to feel like staying on track is impossible. But here’s the thing—you don’t have to give up your hard-earned progress just because it’s the holidays. The key is all about balance and mindful choices. In this blog, we’ll share practical tips to help you maintain your fitness and nutrition without missing out on the festive fun.

1. Stick to Your Fitness Routine (Even If It’s Not Perfect)

The biggest mistake people make during the holidays is skipping workouts just because their diet isn’t perfect. It’s easy to think, “I’ll start fresh in January,” but that mindset can lead to a slippery slope of missed sessions and lost progress. Instead, focus on consistency.

  • Tip: If your schedule is tight, try squeezing in shorter workouts or adjusting your routine. Even a quick 30-minute workout is better than nothing, and it can reignite your motivation to keep eating well.
  • Quick Wins: Add in extra walks where you can, such as walking for 20 minutes after meals. This simple habit can help with digestion and boost your metabolism.

We often tell our clients that maintaining a workout routine—no matter how modified—keeps their energy levels high and motivates them to make better nutrition choices. After all, once you’ve put in an hour at the gym, you’ll want to fuel your body properly!

2. Plan Your Treats: Enjoy Without Overindulging

Holiday treats are inevitable, and honestly, you should enjoy them! The key is moderation and planning. One strategy is to plan out your indulgences so they don’t become daily habits that add up over time.

  • Plan Ahead: If you know you'll be attending a holiday party, eat clean in the days leading up to it and pick one or two treats to enjoy at the event. For example, if your sister-in-law's famous chocolate chip cookies are a must, plan for it, savor it, and move on.
  • Trick: If you're someone who struggles with portion control, try the "three-bite rule." This strategy allows you to enjoy the first bite, savor the second, and finish strong with the third, giving you the full experience without overindulging.

One of our trainers shared her trick for not overdoing it on holiday cookies—she hides a couple in the freezer for later! It’s all about balance and controlling how much you indulge at one time.

3. Get Moving: Sneak in Extra Activity Where You Can

With packed schedules and less time for the gym, it’s essential to sneak in extra movement wherever you can.

  • Post-Meal Walks: Take a 20-minute walk after your meals to kickstart digestion and activate your lymphatic system. It doesn't need to be intense—just enough to get your body moving.
  • Get Creative: If you're an online shopper, try pacing the house or walking up and down the stairs while you scroll. It's an easy way to get in extra steps without losing precious time.

Research shows that walking after meals can help regulate blood sugar and improve digestion, which prevents your body from storing excess calories as fat.

4. Watch the Holiday Beverages: Liquid Calories Add Up Fast

Beverages can be sneaky culprits when it comes to holiday weight gain. From hot chocolates to festive cocktails, these drinks can be loaded with hidden calories.

  • Calorie Watch: A simple 500-calorie holiday drink can add up to a pound of weight gain per week if consumed daily. Over the course of 10 weeks, that's 10 pounds gained, without even considering the festive food!
  • Tip: Limit sugary beverages and opt for water, herbal teas, or lighter options. If you're going to have that pumpkin-spiced latte or holiday punch, make it an occasional treat, not a daily indulgence.

Remember the advice your mom gave you? “You’re not hungry, you’re thirsty.” Often, we mistake thirst for hunger, so drinking water before reaching for a snack can save you from unnecessary calories.

5. Stay Hydrated: Water Is Key During the Holidays

Hydration is essential year-round, but during the holidays, it’s easy to forget about it with all the busyness.

  • Drink Water: Keeping yourself hydrated can help control hunger and prevent overeating. It's also great for your skin, especially in colder, dry months.
  • Pro Tip: If you feel hungry, drink an 8-ounce glass of water first. Often, our bodies confuse thirst with hunger, and this simple step can help you avoid unnecessary snacking.

Drinking water regularly helps with digestion, keeps your skin glowing, and even supports metabolism, all crucial during the holiday season.

Keep It Balanced and Enjoy the Holidays:
The holiday season doesn’t have to throw off your fitness journey. By planning your treats, staying active, and making smart beverage choices, you can maintain your progress without missing out on the joy of the season. Remember, it’s about balance—enjoy yourself, but stay mindful of your choices.
